Mill Steel Company’s Golf For Kids’ Sake Event Raises over $200k for Big Brothers Big Sisters

The partnership between Mill Steel and D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s (DABSJ) Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program dates back over 20 years. The program and the mission it serves of helping kids and their adult mentors improve their personal lives along with build lasting relationships, is near and dear to our CEO and Chairman, David Samrick. Over the years, fundraising and support of BBBS has become a staple in the philanthropic identity of Mill Steel, specifically through our annual Golf For Kids Sake Event (GFKS).

Through the generosity of our friends and business partners, to date, we have been able to donate over $2 million to DABSJ! This year alone, GFKS raised over $200,000.00 in support of BBBS! The money raised from this event helps support current matches and pair hundreds of kids with new mentors – that’s thousands of lives helped on their path to success!

Another key aspect of the event is the award of the Harry Samrick Scholarship Fund to one young adult in the BBBS program. This scholarship covers the recipient’s cost of tuition to a local college and provides them the opportunity to continue their schooling. This year’s Harry Samrick Scholarship winner was Kayla, who plans to attend Grand Rapids Community College in the fall to pursue a degree in social work so she can help others.

Mill Steel Co. Opens Facility in Houston, Texas

Mill Steel Co., one of the nation's largest distributors of flat-rolled carbon steel, expanded its operations and geographic presence with the opening of a new facility in Houston, Texas.

Mill Steel is now operational with slitting and cut-to-length capabilities in their 100,000 square-foot facility. This premier building houses three production lines with the capability of slitting 50,000 lb master coils up to 60” wide and .015-.250” thick. The company plans to add additional production lines in the near future. With these aggressive expansion plans, this will become one of Mill Steel’s flagship service centers.

Mill Steel will distribute its entire product line from this new location, including hot-rolled, cold-rolled, painted, and coated steel. It will maintain a large painted product inventory, with a full complement of paint systems and codes. This development will support Mill Steel's construction, automotive, oil country tubular goods (OCTG), agriculture and HVAC business in the Southern United States and Mexico. Furthermore, the geographic advantages and strategic proximity to the Port of Houston will enhance Mill Steel’s distribution efforts.

“The addition of this location represents Mill Steel's entry into the significant Southern United States market and furthers our customer and product diversification”, said Mill Steel Chairman and CEO, David Samrick. He continues, “We are very pleased to enter this robust commercial territory, which allows us to grow and support our existing customer base.”

Mill Steel Company named as one of West Michigan’s 2017 Best & Brightest Companies to Work For. This honor is awarded to more than 100 West Michigan organizations for their best practices in human resources and commitment to employee enrichment. This is Mill Steel’s 14th year receiving this recognition!

Our 2017 winners create their human resource standards to ensure employee satisfaction and they set standards for every business to aspire toward,” said Jennifer Kluge, President and CEO of B&B Programs.

This year’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For were honored on May 3rd at the annual symposium and awards program at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids. Before the awards ceremony, our very own Corporate Development and Quality Systems Manager, Troy Mossel, took the stage to contribute to a Best Practices Panel formed of representatives from previous Elite Award winning companies.

Mill Steel was proud to receive an Elite Award for our commitment to Recruitment, Selection, and Orientation, one of only 14 Elite Award winners from our region. This is our 9th year taking home an Elite Award and we couldn’t have done it without our associates. Their honest feedback is what earned us this recognition and we are truly thankful for their support.

 
D.A. Blodgett – St.John’s Honors Mill Steel with Daisy Franks Award

Each year, the DA Blodgett – St. John’s Board of Directors reviews a list of nominees for the Daisy Franks Recruitment Award and selects an individual or company who best exemplify Daisy’s commitment to the children and families served by the agency. These have included mentors within the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, foster or adoptive parents, or volunteers who have actively recruited others to join them. In recognition of its dedication and commitment to bringing the Bigs In Business (BIB) program to West Michigan, Mill Steel is the 2017 winner of the Daisy Franks Recruitment Award.

The newest program through Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), called Bigs in Business, is a workplace mentoring program, providing one-on-one mentoring between high school students and a corporation’s employees in a group setting. BBBS strategically approached Mill Steel as the first Bigs in Business pilot partner to expand the current relationship and connect with their professional staff. Bigs in Business is now a permanent fixture in Mill Steel’s daily operations, and it is encouraging other businesses to replicate and implement the program in their workplaces.

The goal of the collaboration among East Kentwood, Mill Steel, and BBBS is to provide workplace mentoring opportunities for high school youths. Through safe, supported, mentoring relationships, youths in the program are exposed to the world of work and are taught skills necessary to reach their full potential. The program reinforces the importance of academics, vocational, and social skill development, and offers associates meaningful volunteer opportunities that can boost morale and engagement during the workday.

Mill Steel’s staff is matched with students based on their personalities and preferences. Once a month sessions include relationship, educational, and skill building activities. Mill Steel provides the mentors, space, food, and transportation for all mentees. The most recent season of the program, spanning from October to May, included 16 participating matches and the company plans to continue the program with the next school year.

Mill Steel Co. Announces Seasoned Financial Executive Marc Rabitoy as New Chief Financial Officer

Mill Steel Co., one of the nation's largest distributors of flat-rolled carbon steel, is pleased to announce the appointment of seasoned financial leader, Marc Rabitoy, as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and partner.

Rabitoy joins Mill Steel with over 25 years of business experience in accounting and finance management. He has consistently excelled to executive roles throughout his career. Most recently, as the Field Finance Managing Director of the Consumer Packaged Goods division at Ryder Integrated Logistics, Inc. He was responsible for integrating the new division into its multi-billion dollar public parent company, while continuing to grow the business.

Prior to that, he was promoted to Vice President of Finance for Total Logistics Control, LLC (TLC) – one of the nation’s top ten national providers of logistics services. While at TLC, he further demonstrated his skill in financial strategy including; treasury management, strategic business planning, internal control, financial analysis, accounting, corporate tax, and risk management. In addition to his extensive commercial knowledge, Rabitoy’s broad background of distribution and transportation will be equally as valuable to Mill Steel.

Rabitoy is a Certified Public Accountant, as well as a current member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA). He is a dedicated supporter of the West Michigan community, in which he and his family reside. Rabitoy formerly sat on the Board of Directors for the Grand Rapids Art Museum and Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, and continues to remain active within those organizations.
