Mill Steel Company Recognized As Top Employer in Western Michigan
Grand Rapids, MI May 3, 2006
For the fourth year in a row, Mill Steel has been named one of the 10 Elite Winners of “West Michigan's 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For” by the Michigan Business and Professional Association.
The company was recognized for its ability to successfully educate, motivate, and reward its staff, earning Mill Steel the Elite Category award for best overall Recognition and Retention. This was the seventh accolade given by the MBPA to Mill Steel in the last four years.
“We are honored to have been again recognized for the success of our approach to business,” said company president Andrew Samrick. “This award is a testament to our team’s commitment – to our customers, to our suppliers, and to being the kind of company we all want to work for.”
The MBPA noted specific examples of Mill Steel’s strategy as exceptional and unique. These included:
- A culture of ownership, which ensures that the right people want to stay and grow with the company
- Discretionary bonuses that immediately reward exceptional performance
- Opportunities for staff to join senior management in forward-looking business planning
- Monthly luncheons that allow all staff to discuss opportunities and challenges directly with company management and ownership
- Building an environment that people want to participate in, and therefore have no reason to look elsewhere for work
"Elite Award recipients stand out from most businesses in that they have exceeded traditional practices used to recruit, develop, motivate and retain their employees," said Jennifer Kluge, COO and executive vice president of the Michigan Business & Professional Association.
Other companies recognized for outstanding performance included Deloitte & Touche, Herman Miller, Mercantile Bank of Michigan, Crowe Chizek and Company, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Ernst & Young, Sparrow Health Systems, Fishbeck Thompson Carr & Huber, and Beene Garter LLP. These elite winners showed outstanding innovation in implementation in all facets of human resource practices.
The Elite Award for Recognition and Retention was presented in a ceremony held in Grand Rapids. Awards for Metro Detroit will be announced later this year.
Commenting on the most recent award, Samrick added, “Mill Steel is focused on being the best supplier of materials and technical support to our customers in the automotive, appliance, and furniture sectors. A high performance team is the key to making this happen. We’re pleased to be named as a top employer – but the chance to succeed for our customers is what brings us all to work every day!”
